Validation and WAI
Jun 22nd, 2006 by ShaunO
Well, having just spent a few hours, literally, getting a few pages through css, xhtml and WAI automated testing I’m more convinced than ever I need a good validating editor for editing page content which is designed to be hosted on a framework (or in a content management system) because of course these are page ’snippets’, not full pages which something like dreamweaver can validate - anybody know of one?
Once you make sure the framework and any code is not generating validation errors then you literally have to check every page - especially those pages which have been migrated. And all those pages which have been hand coded and use many ‘deprecated features’ simply because that’s the way you’re used to coding pages are not going to get through WAI automated tests.
On the upside, my site (well at the moment a few pages, but definitely all the framework generated material), which uses the big ‘no-no’ - tabled layout - can be made to get through all the automated tests…..
It is possible, but be prepared for a few boring hours of tracking down deprecated elements and working out how to implement them in a another way. I have generally found this means replacing them with a style=”something” equivalent (e.g border=”0″ on an img is deprecated, but style=”border:0;” is ok).
