SL_Email_HUD: a Second Life Email Tool
Aug 21st, 2006 by ShaunO
I mentioned Ordinal Malaprop’s freebie slurlblogger in my last post and that ‘if you were using it to’…
Well… I couldn’t resist :-) so I have expanded and modified it and called it SL_Email_HUD (HUD = Head Up Display). It has effectively become a general email HUD tool in addition to its original capability of being a SLURL emailer.
The summary of current capability is (from its help):
Works on channel 910 e.g. say /910 “something” and it will record a line with the SLURL for current location + “something” as a note to it.
Say /910 text “something” to record just a plain line of text containing “something”.
Commands: /910 list - list stored lines, /910 clear - to clear all stored lines, /910 help - to display this help.
Email Commands: /910 temail email@address - sets temporary email address (used for one email action & then resets).
To Email: /910 email [subject line] - sends email based on current email address settings with an optional subject line.
Touch HUD for the dialog box alternative to some of the above commands.
There is a notecard in the object, like the original slurlblogger, in which you can record the ‘permanent’ default email address.
I’m going to trial it by posting stuff directly to my blog, the process for this is: set up a special email address, SL_Email_HUD sends its emails to that special address, WordPress is configured to check the special address & if WordPress finds a new email it ‘automagically’ posts it, using the email subject as post title and the email body as the body of the post.
One limitation in WordPress - there is currently no way to get it to switch categories - this is hard-wired into the ‘Writing by email’ configuration (Options, Write) so it will always be in one category when it’s coming in via email (one could customise WordPress for this I suppose).
Finally, using SL_Email_HUD’s combination of plain ‘text’ (/910 text …), its ability to do subject lines (/910 email some subject line), and its ‘one-shot’ email address (/910 temail some_email@address) capabilities effectively provides a general purpose ‘in-world’ email tool - whether you ever needed it or not :-)
Anyway, if you want a copy to look over give me a shout.

If I can ever get off this other vr project, I’d love to take a look. I’ve been busy for several months and have missed some interesting upgrades - including HUDs.
