The Wrights

An excerpt from A Dictionary of Surnames....

WRIGHT English and Scots: common occupational name for a maker of machinery or objects, mostly in wood, of any of a wide range of kinds, from OE wyrhta, wryhta craftsman (a deriv. of wrycan to work, make). The term is found in several combinations (cf., e.g., Cartwright and Wainwright), but when used in isolation it generally referred to a builder of windmills or watermills.

Variants: Wrighte, Wraight(e), Wreight, Wrate.

Patronymic: Wrightson, Wrixon.

A Dictionary of Surnames, by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges, published 1988 by Oxford University Press.

so now you know .....!!!

Famous WRIGHTS include Orville and Wilbur Wright, US aviation pioneers and Frank Lloyd Wright, US architect. Obscure WRIGHTS are exemplified by John Wright, who, with his brother, Christopher, were co-conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. (Guy Fawkes and all that!)

Other WRIGHTS in the more recent public eye include

  • Tony Wright, British Labour Party MP for Cannock Chase.
  • Tony Wright, English cricket player.
  • Syreeta Wright, US singer, songwriter and wife of Stevie Wonder.

Are there any links? I really do not know. That, however, is the task I have created for myself and for which I am using this medium. To seek help from anyone who feels they have something to offer, if only to say “Hi, and by the way, I am (yet) another WRIGHT"

Other family links that I would like to know of include

  • MEECH
  • TOSDEVINE
  • ROBERTS

These are the most obvious links of interest to me if you study my family tree. It should be noted my interest is not only to search for my forebears but also for those to whom I am related. So, I expect my tree to become wider as well as longer. A task, I think you will agree, where I could use all the help I can get.
